U Mobile has introduced its 5G wireless home broadband offering called U Home 5G and it’s the first telco in Malaysia to offer a home 5G broadband solution without a contract. As part of its launch promo, the plan is offered for only RM68/month (Normal RM78/month) and you can subscribe without any obligations.
For RM68/month, the U Home 5G plan offers unlimited 5G and 4G quota with no speed cap. In terms of speed, U Mobile said it offers at least 100Mbps download on 5G as Digital Nasional Berhad guarantees a minimum of 100Mbps across its nationwide 5G network. On 4G, U Mobile says its 4G network can offer 23Mbps average speeds according to Ookla speedtest.
The U Home 5G is offered without a contract as this is a SIM-only data plan and it works for both hotspot and non-hotspot usage. This means you’ll have to buy your own 5G wireless router to use the service. However, it is stated in their FAQ that they may restrict your speed if they detect abuse or unusually high usage above 1000GB. Upon reaching the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) limit, the T&C states that the speed will be reduced to 512kbps.
If 1000GB isn’t enough, U Mobile is also offering a U Home 5G add-on with 1000GB quota for RM30. That means you can get a whopping 2000GB of 5G data for only RM98/month. That calculates to just 5 sen per GB.
According to U Mobile’s website, they are recommending the ZTE MC801A1 (5G) router (Shopee, Lazada) which costs RM1,699 and the ZTE MC8020 (5G) router (Shopee, Lazada) priced at RM1,799. Since the SIM supports hotspot usage, you can also put this on your spare 5G smartphone and use it as a hotspot.
As a comparison, Yes 5G currently offer its Yes Wireless 5G Broadband plan for RM148/month (RM99/month for the first six months). It offers 5G speeds up to 120Mbps, however, 4G is uncapped but there’s a monthly quota of 150GB. Although it is tied to a 24-month contract, Yes 5G is bundling its Infinite Gateway 5G WiFi 6 router (worth RM1,199) for free.
