Mercedes-Benz continues its electrification journey in Malaysia by expanding the Mercedes-EQ all-electric family through two new models. One of them is the Mercedes-AMG EQE53 4MATIC+ which was revealed alongside the higher-end EQS53 4MATIC+.
Together, they are being positioned as the best electric vehicles that Mercedes-Benz has to offer for our market. As for the EQE53 4MATIC, it is a much more powerful model than the existing EQE350+ that was launched in our market late last year.
Mercedes-AMG EQE53 4MATIC+ pricing and availability
In terms of pricing, the new EQE53 4MATIC+ is readily available today in Malaysia with a starting price of RM649,888 OTR without insurance. Do note that the 10% sales tax has already been accounted into the price tag.
As noted in our previous report, Mercedes-AMG has crafted two versions of this souped-up EQE which includes the EQE43 4MATIC. However, the company has no plan at the moment to bring it into our market according to Sagree Sardien, the President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM).
Sagree noted that the company believe that the EQE53 4MATIC+ has the right positioning for customers in Malaysia and fits rather nicely within MBM’s portfolio. However, it will still look into the matter if the need arises or there are substantial demands from customers.
Power output, charging time, and range
So, what do you get for an additional RM230,000 over the existing EQE350+? Well, for starters, the AMG version has an all-wheel drive setup as noted by the 4MATIC monicker on its name and the variant is also powered by two electric motors.
As the Malaysian variant has the AMG Dynamic Plus package as a standard, all the EQE53 4MATIC+ sold here can achieve a maximum power output of up to 505kW (687hp) together with a maximum torque range of up to 1000Nm. In addition to that, the package also increases the EV’s top speed from 220km/h to 240km/h as well as shaves off its 0 to 100km/h sprint time from 3.5 to 3.3 seconds.
As a reference, the existing EQE350+ can deliver an output of 215kW (292hp) and 565Nm of torque with a 0 to 100km/h acceleration rate of 6.4 seconds and 210km/h top speed. Despite the differences in performance, the EQE53 4MATIC+ still carries the same 90.56kWh battery as EQS 350+.
Hence, there are no changes to the charging time with 32 minutes to reach 10% to 80% state of charge through 170kW DC charging. For AC charging, the EV which has an onboard 11kW AC charger takes around 9 hours and 15 minutes to be fully charged from 0%.
When it comes to range, the EQE53 4MATIC+ can travel between 458km to 527km according to WLTP standards. While the figure is much lower than the EQE350+ which can go between 587km to 669km, this does not come as a surprise since the AMG model has more firepower.
AMG-centric exterior and interior
Aside from their performance, another factor that separates the AMG and non-AMG EQE models apart is the rear axle steering feature that was previously only available with the higher-end EQS. This feature helps the EV to be more manoeuvrable as the rear wheel would steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds under 60km/h.
In addition to that, the souped-up model has also been fitted with a much larger 21-inch AMG cross-spoke light-alloy wheels in matt black alongside red brake callipers as default in Malaysia. Together with body-coloured AMG spoiler lip, Digital Light, and panorama sliding sunroof, the Malaysian variant also comes standard with the AMG Night package that provides black or black chrome finish on selected parts of the car depending on specific paintwork.
If you are looking for the easiest way to tell the EQE53 4MATIC+ and EQS350+ apart, try to spot the AMG badge on its grille cover. Of course, there are also the badges on their boot too.
The interior of the high-performance luxury saloon is mainly draped in Artico man-made leather and Microcut microfiber in two-tone black and space grey combination together with red topstitching. Customers also choose to have Nappa leather as the seat upholstery which is also accompanied by AMG-specific seat graphics.
The sporty nature of the model is highlighted further by the carbon-fibre portion of the steering wheel and centre console. There are also plenty of other AMG styling features within the EV’s interior such as the AMG sports pedals, AMG floor mats, and door sill trims with AMG lettering.
Unlike its non-AMG counterpart, the Malaysian variant of EQE53 4MATIC+ is equipped with the MBUX Hyperscreen – the massive three-screen combo that covers the driver, centre console, and passenger. Furthermore, the two control buttons on the car’s AMG Performance steering wheel also have their own LCD screens that display driving settings.
This model also comes with AMG Track Pace which is primarily designed for those who love track days. It essentially acts as a virtual personal race engineer within the MBUX infotainment system by keeping track and displaying telemetry data in addition to lap and sector times.
MBUX augmented reality head-up display and augmented reality for navigation is also standard for EQE53 4MATIC+ in Malaysia. The model has also been provided with the Premium Plus package that carries Burmester 3D surround sound system, active ambient lighting, and Thermotronic automatic climate control.
EV is usually rather quiet as opposed to traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines but not so much for the EQE53 4MATIC+ though as drivers can choose to turn on the AMG Sound Experience to pump in a little bit of soul into their drive. Delivered through a combination of specially-designed speakers, bass actuator, and sound generator, the Malaysian variant has an additional Performance soundscape which is part of the AMG Dynamic Plus package that came as standard over here.
Safety and assistance packages
As you may expect from a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the Malaysian variant of the EQE53 4MATIC+ comes with a long list of safety features. Together with window and knee airbags as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system and emergency call system, it comes standard with the Driving Assistance Plus package that includes features such as Active Distance Assist Distronic, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, and rear sensors for the lane departure assistant.
For parking, the EV has been fitted with a 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist, Remote Parking Assist, and Memory Parking Assist. There is also the Mirror package that provides automated dimming for both interior and exterior mirrors as well as the option to make the exterior mirror fold automatically once the car has been parked.
