Netflix cracks down password-sharing in Malaysia: extra user slot costs RM13 per month

It has been known for quite some time that Netflix is cracking down on the practice of password sharing among its customers. In fact, the popular streaming service rolled out anti-password sharing implementation in Latin America last year but has expanded it to more than 100 countries globally including Malaysia starting today.

According to the official announcement that was published on the company’s newsroom, subscribers can share their Netflix account but just among the people that live within the same household. If they want to share the account with someone that lives outside the household, then they have to opt for the extra member slot.

In Malaysia, this extra member slot carries a monthly fee of RM13 per user which would be paid by the account owner. As for the number of extra member slots that they can add to their Netflix account, that would be just one additional user for the Standard plan while the Premium plan can support up to two extra slots.

When it comes to user experience, extra members will continue to be able to watch content with the same video quality as the account owner. They also would not have any problems watching Netflix on any device while travelling outside of their home.

However, they can only utilise Netflix on one device at a time. Similarly, they are allowed to download content only on one phone or tablet at any given time.

The extra member will be provided with their own profile and while they can set their own maturity rating, it can’t be turned into a Kids’ profile though. Furthermore, the extra member slot has to be activated in the same country as per the account owner which means the invite that is generated by a Netflix Malaysia account can’t be activated in other countries.

Not to forget, the extra member slot is not available for Netflix accounts that are part of partner packages or third-party billing. So, if you obtained your Netflix access as part of your Astro package, then this feature is not available for you.

Meanwhile, the extra member slot can only be purchased through a web browser and TV app. To know more, do check out this particular FAQ on Netflix’s official website.
