ChargEV migrates Starbucks DC chargers to kWh-based pricing

ChargEV has switched the pricing structure for its EV fast chargers at Starbucks Malaysia outlets from time-based to kWh-based starting 22 May onwards. The announcement came just several weeks after the charging point operator first adopted the policy for the 320kW Kempower DC chargers at Berjaya Times Square before doing the same for the newly updated 50kW DC charger in Publika.

Interestingly enough, the new charging fee that ChargEV has imposed on the Starbucks chargers is RM1.20 per kWh which is similar to the DC chargers in Berjaya Times Square, Publika, and Ayer Keroh OBR Southbound. In addition to that, the same fee also applies to the AC connector on these chargers.

Previously, EV owners have to pay RM1.20 per minute if they want to utilize the ChargEV DC chargers at these Starbucks locations. In general, the kWh-based charging fee is a much fairer policy than time-based pricing.

Imagine that you have an EV that took around 1 hour 30 minutes to be fully charged at one of these Starbucks DC chargers and it has consumed 60kWh during the charging session. Under the new kWh-based fee structure, you would have to pay around RM72 as opposed to RM108 according to the previous time-based arrangement.

Now, try to imagine another EV that also consumed 60kWh but its charging time was only 50 minutes which equals to a charging fee of just RM60 based on the time-based policy. All in all, the kWh-based pricing ensures that everyone is paying the same rate according to their usage regardless of their EV’s charging speed.
