Four months on from NVIDIA’s ‘relaunch’ of the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB as the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, we now have another member of the 70-class family, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070. Positioned as an ideal option for gamers looking to play at 1440p, it will come with the same efficiency advancements and benefits of the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture.
Taking a look at the specs of the RTX 4070, it features 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM with a 192-bit memory interface width, with 5,888 NVIDIA CUDA cores on it. Curiously, the GeForce RTX 4070 has the same number of CUDA cores as the last generation RTX 3070. However, the newer GPU does run these cores at a higher 1.92GHz base clock and a higher 2.48GHz boost clock. The new GPU also comes with 3rd Gen RT cores, 4th Gen Tensor cores as well as support for AV1 encoding.
Now NVIDIA is releasing a ‘Founders Edition’ version of the RTX 4070, which is notable for being much, much smaller than its RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 counterparts. In fact, for the first time in a while, a 2-slot 70-class graphics card could become the norm again, with the Founders Edition measuring 244mm long and 112mm wide too. NVIDIA recommends a 650W power supply if you’re getting the GeForce RTX 4070 for yourself, with it powered by either 2x PCIe 8-pin connectors via an included adaptor or a 300W PCIe Gen 5 cable.
As for performance, NVIDIA claims that the RTX 4070 should fit right into any gaming PC aimed at 1440p ray traced gaming at 100+ FPS. According to their own benchmarks, it will safely and significantly outperform the best 70-class graphics cards from the last two generations. This does however come with the caveat that you’ll want to use DLSS 3 Frame Gen.
Together with the efficiency gains of the Ada Lovelace architecture, NVIDIA says the RTX 4070 will use up to 23% less power than the RTX 3070 Ti while still being 1.7x faster in gaming (with DLSS 3). They also claim it’s 2.6x faster than the RTX 2070 Super with DLSS 3, and will even go toe-to-toe with the GeForce RTX 3080, performing 1.4x better than last generation’s flagship GPU… albeit again with DLSS 3 helping it out.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 will come with a recommended starting price of RM3,049, However, you can expect to see different price ranges for an RTX 4070 depending on the cooling setup on the card as designed by the add-in card provider. Available from 13 April onwards, you can find RTX 4070 options from NVIDIA and their partners such as Asus, Colorful, Gainward, Galax, Gigabyte, Inno3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY, Zotac and more.
