It looks like Apple still won’t give the regular iPhone 15 a 120Hz display

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro devices have been out for quite a while now, and the two couldn’t be more different than each other. While the Pro models got all the new features such as improved cameras and the A16 Bionic chip, it’s perhaps the display where the divide is most apparent, with the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max getting the new Dynamic Island along with Always-On display and ProMotion technology for a 120Hz refresh rate. And that divide will likely continue, albeit only for the latter two features, on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

At least, that’s according to Korean leakster ‘yeux1122’ on Naver. Citing a domestic display industry source, they claim that Apple has already completed the necessary preparations for the iPhone 15 lineup’s display panel supply chain. They add that Apple is pretty much only giving the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max the LTPO display required for their ProMotion feature that lets the iPhone have an adaptive refresh rate between 1Hz to 120Hz. This also means that only the iPhone 15 Pro series will get the Always-On feature, as Apple’s implementation of the always-on display lowers the refresh rate all the way down. Dynamic Island though is expected to trickle down to the non-Pro iPhones.

This appears to be in line with what Ross Young, industry analyst and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, had been saying since September of last year. Answering a question from Forbes columnist Gordon Kelly, Young stated even back then that he expects to see Dynamic Island as a standard across all models of the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro lineup. However, due to supply chain constraints, Cupertino will likely stick with keeping LTPO high refresh rate ProMotion displays on just their iPhone Pro models.

The move to limit the display capabilities of the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus could also help Apple to keep costs low, as these higher end panels will cost them quite a bit. With Apple’s smartphones now making up for eight of the top ten best selling smartphones sold worldwide, it would make sense for Cupertino to keep prices on their non-Pro iPhones low enough to maintain their momentum forward.

If you’re waiting on Apple to drop the iPhone 15 lineup, you’ll need to wait just a little bit longer as it’s expected to only debut some time in September, their regular release season for their smartphones. For those of you using Android and wanting to make the switch, it would make sense to wait till then though as Apple will likely give both the iPhone 15 and the 15 Pro USB-C ports due to the EU’s push for the connector. However, there are rumours they might do a classic Apple move and limit power delivery and data speed on USB-C cables that aren’t verified ‘Made for iPhone’.
