The free trial period for TNB Electron EV Chargers has come to an end and users will have to pay for EV charging starting 1st March 2023. At the moment, TNBX has a total of 3 charging stations along highways which include the North-South Expressway and the East Coast Expressway.
TNB Electron DC Charger rates are calculated based on time
The TNB Electron chargers offer different charging speeds depending on the location and charger setup. Usage for these EV chargers will be based on per minute pricing instead of per kWh consumed. At R&R Tapah (Northbound), one of the ports offers 80kW DC Charging and it costs RM2.05 per minute, while the second port offers 100kW DC Charging for RM2.35 per minute.
For the other two TNB Electron chargers at R&R Paka (Northbound) and R&R Ayer Keroh (Northbound) are offering two nozzles pushing 90kW DC Charging for RM2.20 per minute.
To use the charger, you’ll need to download the Go To-U app which is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You can use it to activate the chargers upon your arrival or book in advance for up to 7 days. Take note that the actual charging speeds are subject to the vehicle and also the current state of charge.
How much does it cost to charge an EV using TNB Electron DC Charger?
With time-based charging by the minute, it is advisable to use these chargers for a quick top-up instead of charging the battery to 100%. Using the 90kW DC charger, a 20-minute charge would cost RM44. For the BYD Atto 3 Extended Range, it can only accept DC Charging up to a maximum rate of 80kW which is roughly 26kWh charge in 20 minutes. That’s a 40% battery top up which translates to about 170km of additional driving range. The cost of EV charging would be fairer to consumers if it is based on kWh, as you pay exactly for how much you use, not by how much time you spent parking in front of the charger.
