Spotify is ditching the heart for a plus button

If you’re a big Spotify user you’ve probably seen the heart icon whenever you’re playing a song, usually next to the song title and artist as you play your tunes. It’s always been an easy way to mark the songs you wanted to save directly to Your Library, a helpful tool to keep track of your next favourite songs especially when checking out new music.

However, Spotify is set to get rid of the iconic heart button now, and instead the streaming platform wants to replace it with a Plus (+) button instead. In fact, it’s not just the heart icon that’s about to disappear—Spotify is going to replace both the heart icon and the ‘Add to playlist’ button into the single Plus (+) button. So now, as you’re playing your tunes, you can tap on the Plus (+) button to first save the song to Your Library, which turns it into a green check. Tap it again, and now you can also select where you’ll be saving the song to; you can use this to add it to multiple playlists at one go. This will also work with any podcast episode that you listen to.

According to Spotify, they’re ‘upgrading’ their UI to include the Plus (+) button now as a way of streamlining the methods users use to save their favourite music and podcasts. Furthermore, they claim that in their research, they found that the Plus (+) button change helped users save time, especially with the ability to add to multiple playlists at once. Spotify also say that by saving songs and podcasts, it makes users more likely to listen to them again.

The Plus (+) button change is already being rolled out to users as we write this, starting with mobile users on iOS and Android devices. It should be available to all Spotify users within the coming weeks.
