Facial recognition has finally returned to the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app after the feature was disabled last year. This time, the Touch ‘n Go eWallet appears to be using Apple’s own local authentication but the functionality is quite limited compared to the previous facial verification feature.
At the moment, the Biometric ID feature using Face ID and Touch ID is only to authenticate users when the eWallet app is launched. When you want to use it for payments, you are still required to enter the 6-digit PIN which isn’t ideal to enter if you’re in a crowded public space. Previously, Touch ‘n Go eWallet users were able to use their face to authorise payments but it uses a different facial recognition system that doesn’t use Apple’s Face ID framework.
Despite still being required to enter a 6-digit PIN when making a QR payment, the feature does help to keep your Touch ‘n Go eWallet app secure if your phone is lost or stolen. To enable the feature, tap on your profile icon on the top right corner of the Touch ‘n Go eWallet home screen, then go to Settings and turn on “Biometric ID Authentication”.
The description for the feature now reads “Launch app using fingerprint or facial recognition”. Previously, the feature was described as “Log in and make payments by scanning your face”.
At the time of writing, TNG Digital has yet to update its FAQ. Based on their old information last updated 10 months ago, users would be able to use face verification for various functions including P2P transfer, DuitNow QR, customer scan barcode and merchant scan customer’s bar code transactions.
