Following the opening of the TNB Electron EV chargers at Ayer Keroh and Paka R&R last month, the power utility company has announced that its third charging hub at Tapah R&R (northbound) on the North-South Expressway is now open. As part of its introductory offer, the DC charger capable of pushing up to 180kW is now available for free.

TNB Electron Charger at Tapah R&R

To use the charger, you’ll need to download the Go To-U app which is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You can activate the charger immediately for free during the trial period or make an early booking up to 7 days in advance. Although the app shows two CCS2 charging outlets, only one can be used at a time during its testing phase which offers 1x 180kW. The location also has one slower 11kW AC charger as well.

While the charger can push up to 180kW, the actual charging speeds will vary depending on your vehicle’s maximum charging rate as well as the current state of charge. For example, a Hyundai Kona Electric can only accept a maximum DC charging rate of up to 77kW while the BYD Atto 3 can receive up to 80kW for the extended range model. It is recommended to limit your DC fast charging up to 80% as the charging rate will dip significantly as the battery charge percentage increases.

In case you missed it, the TNB Electron DC chargers at R&R Ayer Keroh (northbound) and R&R Paka (northbound) are still available for free during the testing period with 2x90kW. In total, there are currently three TNB Electron charging stations activated along the interstate highways so far and TNB has not yet reveal its EV charging rate after the trial period is over. Hopefully, it will be calculated per kWh used instead of time-based calculation.

TNB has revealed that it will be investing RM90 million over a two-year period to build DC charging stations throughout the country. It aims to build 7 more DC stations in Malaysia by the end of this year along PLUS Highway. You can learn more about TNB’s charging network here.
