nPerf, a French company that does telecom network crowdsource testing, has released its 2022 report on Malaysia’s mobile internet connections. The biggest takeaway from its analysis is that Yes has become the new leader when it comes to mobile internet connection speeds in Malaysia.
That’s perhaps not too surprising, considering they were the first telco to go in on the domestic 5G network. nPerf found that Yes managed to provide users with an average download speed close to 125Mb/s, putting way ahead of Unifi Mobile and U Mobile, who came in at second and third place respectively at 39.32Mb/s and 31.08Mb/s. They also won the battle for the fastest upload speeds, with an average 14.41Mb/s upload bitrate, as well as the telco with the least latency at just 42.77ms.
According to nPerf, Yes did so well in fact, that they scored the highest nPerf score overall compared to its competitors. Yes finished the year with 63,433 nPoints, with Unifi Mobile coming in second place with 54,822 nPoints and U Mobile third with 53,804 nPoints. The nPerf score is an overall picture of the quality of connection, with nPerf taking into account the measured bitrates, latency and quality of experience such as browsing and streaming; nPerf calls their scoreboard a reflection of the overall quality of connection felt by the users themselves.
Incidentally, Maxis—despite being the only telco without 5G in Malaysia—was found to be the best telco for video streaming on YouTube. Specifically, nPerf measures the visualisation quality of a video on YouTube, considering the time required to load a video. Yes meanwhile ended up the worst performer among the telcos when it comes to nPerf’s video streaming performance.
These figures for video streaming performance actually correspond quite nicely with OpenSignal’s report on Malaysia’s mobile network experience back in September of last year too. They had also found Yes was the worst performing telco in this aspect, while Maxis was the best telco for video experience.
In fact, Yes again comes in at last place when it comes to web browsing performance. nPerf found that it was in fact Unifi Mobile that provided its users with the best web browsing performance, measured by checking the average performance for loading the five most frequented websites in Malaysia excluding YouTube. In second place meanwhile is Maxis, going to show that while they may not be the fastest network, the green telco still offers a reasonable quality of experience for the user.
