Salahuddin Ayub: Govt developing a Menu Rahmah app to help you find RM5 meals

You’ve probably seen the news articles and social media posts by now promoting this new Menu Rahmah thing. Essentially, it’s a government initiative encouraging businesses and restaurants big and small to take part in a scheme offering meals at RM5 and less for lunch and dinner to help the rakyat out with rising living costs. You can now find these RM5 meals at places such as Mydin supermarkets to even your local mamak.

However, unless you’re willing to go around town looking for these meals, it might be a little tough to find where exactly these Menu Rahmah meals are being offered. As such, it appears that the government is now looking at developing a mobile app that will list down the locations of restaurants around the country that offer these RM5 meals. At least, that’s according to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

Salahuddin says that his ministry is developing this app that will contain a directory of eateries participating in the Menu Rahmah program. This app will not just list out all the Menu Rahmah locations though, but also provide people with more information on the food operators involved as well as promoting these restaurants and their Menu Rahmah meals. He adds that over 15,000 restaurants nationwide have already taken part in the scheme, and that it has been well received throughout Malaysia.

“Many traders are racing to join this initiative by offering food for as low as RM5 at their outlets, this means they want to do it together in the spirit of charity without anyone being compelled.

We do not (need to) compel, rather it is a deal with the industry including Mydin (Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad), Malaysian Indian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association, Pertom and Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners Association,” – Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub

The minister also noted that the Menu Rahmah initiative itself does not involve any government funds directly, instead only depending on eateries themselves to take part. However, he added that they never forced any business or restaurant to offer a Menu Rahmah meal.
