The Samsung Galaxy S23 series may look similar to last year’s model but it boasts improve imaging with its insane 200MP main camera on the range-topping Galaxy S23 Ultra. Besides providing greater detail, the device boasts improved low-light capabilities including astrophotography to capture the starry sky and beyond. In fact, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s periscope telephoto lens can capture a “clear image” of the moon and even Elon Musk is impressed.

As demonstrated by MKBHD, he was able to get a clear shot of the moon at 100x “Space zoom”. Of course, this feature isn’t entirely new as the Huawei P30 Pro from 2019 had a similar feature called “Moon mode” and you can also capture a similar image on last year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra. Some argued that the camera isn’t taking a real picture of the moon as it relies heavily on AI to enhance the shapes, colours and highlights.
These moon pictures are not exactly real. They use AI to regenerate details that aren't there using stored info. The simplest way to imagine it is like an overlay being applied over the base shot. Moon is tidally locked to us (same face no matter what) so pretty easy.

Regardless of whether you think the captured moon is real or not, it is still quite an impressive feature which not many smartphones can do. The new Samsung flagship device also features Astro Hyperlapse which lets you take long-exposure videos at up to 300x speed to capture the movement of stars. Other upgraded features also include improved optical image stabilisation (OIS) with double the angle of stabilisation compared to the previous generation.
