[ UPDATE 27/01/2023 ] Volvo Car Malaysia announced a recall for 545 cars affected by the Brake Control Module issue.

Swedish carmaker Volvo has initiated a recall for about 106,900 vehicles worldwide over a rare issue affecting the brake-by-wire system. The recall covers most Volvo models including the C40, XC40, S60, XC60, V60, V90 and XC90.
As reported by Auto Blog, the in-vehicle diagnostic test to check the grounding of the system can trigger a fault with the Brake Control Module 2 (BCM2). When the fault is triggered, the vehicle will revert to its hydraulic system so that drivers can still stop the car. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States elaborated that the issue is due to a diagnostic BCM2 which can cause the loss of the Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and traction control.
The issue may affect other advanced driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control and one-pedal driving. However, it does not affect drivers’ ability to apply the brakes manually to stop the car. If the fault is triggered, drivers will be alerted with a warning message and a malfunction lamp in the instrument cluster.
The good news is that the issue is expected to be fixed with a software update which will be pushed over the air. The update is said to come with a logic that’s a better fit for the Brake Control Module 2 hardware and it will be implemented sometime in February 2023, while customers will be notified in March. No accidents or injuries due to the issue have been reported so far.
We’ve reached out to Volvo Car Malaysia and we will update the post once we have more details about the recall’s impact on Malaysian owners. Volvo is currently the first carmaker to locally assemble electric vehicles in Malaysia. After launching the CKD Volvo XC40 EV, it recently launched the CKD C40 EV which is priced at RM289K.
