What’s going on with H&M Malaysia’s alleged fitting room hidden camera footage situation?

There have been reports earlier this week of hidden camera footage from the changing rooms of a Malaysian H&M outlet seen for sale online. So, what’s going on, and what is H&M Malaysia doing to address the situation?

On Wednesday, it was reported that Twitter user @meleisgw tweeted a horrible discovery of an online seller on Twitter Dark Side reportedly selling recordings of couples and individuals in fitting rooms. In the screenshot that a Twitter user shared, five individuals could be seen in a post, with the caption “PM if want to buy“. Users online have reported that the outlet is the one in Avenue K, as one of the victims came forward to say that she was one of the women in the videos.

“I found the picture floating around online and from my understanding, these videos are being sold on Twitter and people have already purchased them. Someone said these videos were originally advertised on the MeWe application,” said the Twitter user.

What is H&M doing?

On 11 January, H&M came out with a statement regarding the footage. They said that they “have conducted an inspection of the fitting rooms in all H&M stores in Malaysia and are working to ensure that there are no security breaches”.

However, Noor Dellhan Yahaya, assistant commissioner of Dang Wangi, said the security manager of the H&M outlet made a police report on Monday afternoon—much earlier than when the news was blown up on Twitter. According to the assistant commissioner, the manager made the report after seeing a message about the hidden camera footage being circulated on WhatsApp.

But when the assistant commissioner sent their personnel there to investigate, they could not find the camera. They believe “it happened at another location”. He continued saying that the case has been classified under Section 509 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting the modesty of any woman by word, through sound, gesture, or object.

What’s happening now?

As of today, there haven’t yet been any other updates on the issue reported by the police or by H&M Malaysia. However, you can still see a concerning number of short clips from a fitting room when you type in “H&M fitting room” on Twitter. According to the captions, they mention that the footage is from an H&M in Malaysia.
