Even TikTok is worried about your sleep schedule

I’m not unfamiliar with accidentally staying up a bit too late because I’ve scrolled too long on TikTok. And it seems like the platform knows it’s becoming a big problem—so they are testing out something that could help combat this problem for us.

TikTok is testing out new sleep reminders, which are currently being tested with select users globally. The feature includes the option to set up alerts when it’s your bedtime and to mute notifications during the recommended seven hours of sleep.

Screenshots shared by Watchful.ai show that the feature would appear under the “screen time” settings in the app. The app says sleep reminders will help you “know if you reach your sleep time on TikTok to help you get to bed when you want to”.

TikTok has been criticised for hooking users into watching an endless stream of short videos—leading to something called daytime fatigue. The blue light emanating from devices likely doesn’t help, either. Older research of eReaders from 2014 suggested that blue light affected morning alertness, circadian rhythm, and sleep.

This isn’t the first time that the platform has added a feature to help users monitor and control their screen time. Last June, TikTok launched a tool to help users control how much time they spend on TikTok in a single sitting by allowing them to schedule regular screen-time breaks. The app also pushed restricted nighttime notifications for teen accounts.

As TikTok is just testing out the sleep reminder feature, we do not know yet when it will be rolled out to the public. But a friendly reminder telling me to go to bed could help nudge me into a slightly healthier sleep schedule.
