The iPhone SE has been Apple’s entry-level iPhone offering and it is essentially an older iPhone upgraded with their latest chip. According to a well-known Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has cancelled its plans for a 4th gen iPhone SE that’s due in 2024.
Kuo said that suppliers have been informed by Apple that production and shipment plans for the iPhone SE 2024 have been cancelled. He added that it has something to do with Apple’s in-house developed 5G chip. Apparently, the Cupertino company plans to introduce their own baseband chip starting with its entry-level model. However, it seems that the performance isn’t up to par with Qualcomm’s chip which Apple is currently using for its 5G-enabled devices.
The currently 2nd and 3rd gen iPhone SE models are essentially based on the iPhone 8 design which features a rather tiny 4.7″ display. It is also the last remaining iPhone models to feature the old-school Touch ID and a home button. With the recent introduction of the iPhone 14 Plus, Apple has given up on making small-screen phones due to low demand.
However, rumours have indicated that the next iPhone SE is expected to be based on the iPhone XR which comes with a larger 6.1″ HD 720p display. Since Apple has broken its tradition by recycling the same iPhone 13 processor in the new iPhone 14 (non-Pro), it is likely that the next iPhone SE, if it does come to production, will get a processor that’s one generation older.
For us, the 3rd gen iPhone SE 2022 didn’t make much sense. Despite not having 5G and the latest Apple chip, the similarly priced iPhone 11 seems to be a better option as it came with a larger screen, better camera and bigger battery.
If Apple wanted a new “entry-level” phone, they could always offer a price cut for the iPhone 12 which now retails for RM3,199 for 64GB. After the recent price adjustment, the iPhone SE 2022 is now priced at RM2,249 for the same storage capacity. Right now, Apple is selling a total of 8 different iPhone options (not counting storage variants) such as the iPhone SE, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
