Realme is expected to set a new fast-charging record for its upcoming GT Neo 5 smartphone. It has confirmed that it will be the first to offer a smartphone with an insane 240W fast charging technology over USB-C. The maximum charging output is almost 100W more than the OnePlus 10T’s 150W SuperVOOC technology and it could fully charge the device in almost half the time.
Realme has recently revealed the more details of its 240W fast-charging technology. It uses a double-GaN 240W charging brick which draws power at 20V and 12A and pushes an output of 10V and 24A through three charging pumps. Realme claims that the charging brick is the world’s first mini charge with double GaN components with the highest power-to-volume ratio in the industry. To deliver the higher current to the phone’s USB-C port, Realme had to use their own custom 12A charging cable with four 21AWG copper wires and the Amp rating is higher than the usual 10A cables for 100W USB-C PD charging.
For safety, it has several layers of safety protection mechanisms in place with 13 real-time temperature sensors and it uses a PS3-standard fireproof design. To keep the device cool, it uses graphene phase-change cooling materials and it claims to offer the industry’s largest cooling area of 6580 square mm for better heat dissipation. The charging technology has been tested to withstand high temperatures of 85-degree celsius and with 85% high humidity. Realme also says that its batteries will be able to retain 80% of their original charge after 1,600 charge cycles while using its ultra-fast chargers.
If all of these specs seem familiar, it looks identical to Oppo’s 240W SuperVOOC flash charge technology that was showcased during last year’s Mobile World Congress. After all, Oppo, Realme, Vivo and OnePlus are brands under the same BBK Electronics group. During Oppo’s MWC2022 demo, they managed to charge a smartphone with a 4,500mAh battery from 0-50% in 3.5 minutes and a full charge was achieved in just 9 minutes.
The hardware specs of the Realme GT Neo 5 aren’t officially revealed yet but word has it that it will come with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and a 6.7″ Full HD+ display with a 144Hz refresh rate.
