Earlier today, it was reported that a database with the personal details of over 13 million Malaysians had surfaced and was being sold on an online forum. The seller of this database also claims that these details were nabbed from Astro, Maybank and the SPR.
Astro however has since responded to the matter. In a statement, the company says that they’ve been alerted to the alleged unauthorised sharing of certain customer information. However, following their own investigations, Astro says that none of their customers’ confidential information has been leaked out. They do add though that their investigations are still ongoing, and will provide further information if and when it’s available.
“Astro has been alerted to an incident involving an alleged unauthorised sharing of certain information of our customers.
Based on our investigation to date Astro believes that that none of our customers’ confidential information that we hold has been compromised. The security of our customers’ confidential information is of primary importance to us and we believe we have taken the necessary security measures to protect the data of our customers,” – Astro
In the seller’s post on the online forum, some sample data was provided, and in the section listed under ‘Astro’, details such as the full name of a customer along with their IC number, three phone numbers and their full address was listed down. The database is said to hold 3.5 million records from Astro, with a further 1.8 million from Maybank and 7.2 million from SPR.
Astro aren’t the only company involved to have made a statement though. Maybank has also since stated that they’re taking the data leak allegations seriously, and are also in the midst of investigating the issue while also claiming that they have not experienced a data breach.
