The new year is coming up, and it’s when some of us do a bit of spring cleaning—from giving away clothes to getting rid of a hoard you’ve been stacking in your house for some time. But what about your phone? Well, there’s a way to free up some space on there by clearing your browser cache.
Your browser cache is described basically as a “digital refrigerator” that helps you store website data so those pages can load faster the next time you visit them. However, they might no longer match the data the sites actually need to load, and pages would actually load slower as a consequence.
Clearing your cache will give those sites a fresh start in your browser. It will also free up some space in your storage. Here’s how to get rid of the browser cache in your phone.
Following the process will affect all signed indevices. So, you’ll need to sign in to everything the next time you use them, but your devices’ caches will be cleared. Here’s how:
Safari (iPhone)
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Select Safari from the list of apps
- Go to Advanced at the bottom on the screen
- Pick Website Data
- Scroll down and select Remove All Website Data
- Choose Remove Now in the pop-up box
Google Chrome (iPhone)
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Chrome app
- At the bottom, tap More
- Tap History
- Pick Clear browsing data
- Make sure there’s a checkmark next to “Cookies, Site Data,” and “Cached Images and Files.”
- Tap Clear Browsing Data
Firefox (iPhone
- With Firefox open, tap the Menu and tap Settings
- Under Privacy, tap Data Management
- With the cache toggle turned on, tap Clear Private Data. Tap it again to confirm
Google Chrome (iPhone)
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app
- At the top right, tap More
- Tap History then pick Clear Browsing Data
- At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All Time
- Next to “Cookies and site data” and “Cached images and files,” check the boxes
- Tap Clear Data
Firefox (iPhone)
- With Firefox open, tap the three horizontal dots in the bottom right and select Settings
- Tap Delete Browsing Data section and make sure the box for Cached images and files is checked
- Tap the Delete Browsing Data button
You’re advised to clear your browser cache once every month or two. But if you frequently visit a large number of sites, you should consider clearing your cache more often.
