Discord announced that they are introducing a system called Linked Roles, which lets admins and moderators grant people access to certain channels and servers based on which accounts users have linked on their Discord profiles. According to Discord, it is “a new type of role that’s created by authenticating your profile with an account” outside of the platform.
“When you’re meeting someone on a Discord server, sometimes it’s helpful to have some of your other accounts on-hand to share some info about yourself. It’s like being a loving father with dozens of pictures of his family shoved inside his wallet, but instead of photos of extended family, it’s all you and your dozens of strangely-popular meme video Twitter accounts,” wrote Discord on their blog.
Basically, Linked Roles will support connecting accounts from sites like Steam, Twitter, Reddit, DeviantArt, and more. The feature will be rolling out “over the next few weeks”.
By linking outside accounts to your Discord, you’ll be able to show off official connections directly on your profile and even certain details from certain connected accounts, like follower count and site activity. Moderators could, for example,make it so only people with a linked Crunchyroll account can get into the “Anime-Fans” channel or that people with a linked eBay account will get to see the “Garage-Sale” chat.
According to Discord, the main purpose of Linked Roles is to “help bring a sense of security to your space”. It’s also to help automate the process of determining whether people are legit or not.
“Whether it’s hanging out in your communities, playing games with friends, or trading rares, Linked Roles can help bring a sense of security to your space. During our testing period, we heard from admins and noticed in usage that server members who have a Linked Role in their community were more likely to earn the trust of their fellow members who then felt more comfortable chatting with them,” said Discord.
