The Vivo Y22s is their new sub-RM1,000 smartphone packing a Snapdragon 680

Vivo has a new midrange smartphone in Malaysia for those seeking a device on a budget. The Vivo Y22s packs the solid Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor, but it seems that it has had several corners cut in order to meet its sub-RM1,000 price tag.

Vivo Y22s Malaysia pricing and availability

The Vivo Y22s will come in just one configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You’ll be able to get it for RM999 from any Vivo concept store, their authorised dealers, the Vivo official eStore as well as the official Vivo store on Shopee and Lazada. If you get it from 26 November to 25 December, you’ll also be able to claim an additional year of extended warranty worth RM199.

However, it’s a bit of a tough sell when you consider that Vivo has a few better midrange options within their stable. If you’re looking for a Snapdragon 680-powered device for example, the Vivo T1x is still being sold with a lower price tag and better overall specs. The Vivo T1 5G meanwhile is currently going for just RM1,130 on Vivo’s Shopee and Lazada stores, and has a much more powerful Snapdragon 778G processor under the hood.

Vivo Y22s specs

Right off the bat, you can probably see where Vivo had cut corners on the Y22s. It packs a 6.55-inch, HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate, which is a pretty mediocre display to have on a smartphone that had cost you almost RM1,000. In comparison, its rivals such as the Realme 9 and Redmi Note 11 Pro are all using FHD+ AMOLED displays instead, while even Vivo’s own T1x has a FHD+ LCD display.

Under the hood meanwhile, the Vivo Y22s packs a Snapdragon 680 system-on-chip with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It also features Extended RAM 3,0, which allows you to use part of the system storage as additional RAM when needed. You can pop in an additional microSD card that’s up to 1TB in size too. The Vivo Y22s comes with Funtouch OS 12 out of the box.

In the camera department meanwhile, the Vivo Y22s has a 50MP, f/1.8 main camera above a 2MP, f/2.4 macro sensor on the rear. For selfies meanwhile you get an 8MP, f/2.0 front-facing camera. It also packs a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging that Vivo claims will last over 21 hours of video streaming. Other features of note include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and support for WiFi 5, NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. It weighs 192g and measures 8.38mm thick, and is available in either Starlit Blue or Summer Cyan colourways.
