It was just last week that Qualcomm had launched their brand new flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but the San Diego company isn’t done yet. They’ve now quietly revealed the Snapdragon 782G, which isn’t really a next generation chip for the Snapdragon 700 series, but is rather more of a refresh of the popular Snapdragon 778G instead.
The Snapdragon 782G is an upper midrange processor built on the 6nm process that for the most part keeps a large chunk of the Snapdragon 778G’s parts. This means that it keeps the same Spectra image signal processor, the Qualcomm AI Engine and Snapdragon X53 5G modem providing WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity.
As for where the upgrades are, it’s hidden away in the actual CPU itself. The Kryo CPU still packs the same eight core setup, with four Cortex-A78 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. However, the Cortex-A78 is now allowed to run at 2.7GHz, higher than the Snapdragon 778G’s 2.4GHz and the Snapdragon 778G+’s 2.5GHz. This will see the Snapdragon 782G provide a 5% improvement in CPU performance, along with a 10% improvement from its Adreno GPU.
Other features of note include Quick Charge 4+ for juicing up batteries to up to 50% in just 15 minutes, along with improved audio via the latest Snapdragon Sound. There’s also now support for 200MP camera sensors and HDR10+ video capture.
Overall, it’s a pretty minor refresh for their upper midrange segment, so you might want to temper your expectations a bit when using a smartphone powered by a Snapdragon 782G. And speaking of smartphones using it, the Snapdragon 782G is widely expected to make its debut later this week in the new Honor 80.
