Honor is still making foldable devices and they are about to launch the Honor Magic Vs next week. This is the successor to the current Honor Magic V, a foldable device which has a similar form factor as the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Ahead of its China launch event, Honor has started teasing the Magic Vs via EsquireFine magazine and it reveals support for a stylus.
In terms of design, the Magic Vs looks similar to the Magic V with an edge-to-edge cover display and a flexible internal display that has no notch. Even the camera bump looks unchanged with a triple-camera array and a thin strip next to it which houses the LED flash.
What’s new is a stylus which makes this the third foldable device to support it after the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Z Fold 4. From the teaser, the stylus appears to be thick and we reckon there’s no way to slot it into the Magic Vs when it is not in use. Similar to Samsung, Magic Vs users would likely have to get a special case that has a special holder for the stylus.
In a separate EsquireFine video, there’s a short glimpse of the Honor Magic Vs stylus in action and it appears to have a very similar interface to Apple’s freeform app on the iPad. For Android, Samsung still has the best stylus experience thanks to years of S Pen development since the very first Galaxy Note. It would be interesting to see if Honor’s stylus could offer a similar experience with its new stylus on the Magic Vs.
Since Honor’s new foldable appears to be a mid-life “tock” upgrade, the Magic Vs might retain most of the same hardware features as the V but it gets a newer Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. To recap, the Magic V which was launched in January this year features a 6.45″ Full HD 120Hz OLED cover display while the inside gets a 7.9″ 2272×1984 pixels 90Hz flexible OLED panel which supports HDR10+ and a peak brightness of 800 nits. Under the hood, it runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage.
The device gets a triple-camera setup at the rear which consists of three 50MP cameras for main, ultra-wide and an additional “spectrum enhanced” camera. For selfies, it gets a 42MP camera for the front cover as well as the punch-hole in the main display. The Magic V gets a 4,750mAh battery which supports 66W SuperCharge fast charging via USB-C. Unlike the Galaxy Fold 4, there’s no IP-rated water resistance or wireless charging.
It isn’t clear if the Honor Magic Vs will come to Malaysia since the earlier Magic V was only offered in its home market of mainland China. Despite having just one foldable device, Honor claims to have a significant foothold in the foldable smartphone segment with a 7% market share in China according to IDC’s Q3 2022 numbers. The Magic Vs will be launched in China on 23rd November 2022 and Honor Malaysia urge fans to stay tuned for more details.
