Over the past two years, HUAWEI has been steadily building on the strength of the Mate series, adding innovations and industry-leading technologies such as curved high-refresh-rate screens and bleeding-edge cameras.
Now, the company has released the Mate50 series, featuring a slew of new features that put it at the front of the pack once again. But without Google mobile services (GMS), can the HUAWEI Mate50 series really be the best smartphone of 2022? Here are several reasons why it can.
Top-rated camera with variable aperture
HUAWEI has been at the forefront of camera technology, and the Mate50 series takes this to new heights. It’s the first smartphone to feature HUAWEI’s own mobile imaging brand, XMAGE, spearheaded by a 50MP main camera with the industry’s first variable aperture lens.
The camera can physically adjust its aperture in ten steps, from f/1.4—the largest found on a smartphone—all the way to f/4. This lets in an unprecedented level of light, and when combined with the XD Fusion Pro image engine, it allows the camera to freely adjust image brightness, depth of field and light and shadow detail, no matter the lighting conditions.
The Mate50 series’ imaging prowess has even been recognised by renown camera and lens benchmark DXOMARK, which placed the device first in its smartphone camera rankings. It achieved a score of 149, beating Google’s own flagship Pixel 7 Pro.
Thin and light with a 4,700mAh battery
Another area where the Mate50 series excels is battery life. The Mate50 Pro incorporates a large 4,700mAh battery, yet despite this, it manages to be even lighter than its predecessor. Charging it is also a cinch, thanks to the 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge and 50W Wireless HUAWEI SuperCharge.
And if you somehow still find yourself with a low charge, don’t fret—the Mate50 series comes with an innovative Low-battery Emergency Mode that will automatically kick in once the battery level falls to 1%. The SuperEnergy Boosting technology enables the Mate50 series to boost standby time by more than two hours, or 12 minutes of call time.
Brand new EMUI 13 with innovative new features
The Mate50 Series is the first HUAWEI smartphone to run EMUI 13, the latest version of the company’s operating system. It incorporates several unique features, including SuperStorage that imperceptibly removes duplicate files and compresses rarely-used apps. This preserves up to 20GB of space.
Also included is SuperHub, which enables users to temporarily store images, documents and text and share them in batches. This allows for free and easy file transfers between apps and devices.
Fantastic durability with Kunlun glass screen
The Mate50 Pro’s 6.74-inch OLED curved display is stunning enough as is, with its 120Hz refresh rate. But the Orange Vegan Leather Edition has another trick up its sleeve—the addition of Kunlun glass.
Named after the ancient Kunlun mountain range in China, it consists of 10 quadrillion-level nanocrystals, making it ten times more drop resistant than regular smartphone glass. In fact, the Orange Vegan Leather Edition is the first ever smartphone to get a five-star glass drop resistance certification from Switzerland’s SGS.
Dunking the Mate50 Orange Vegan Leather Edition in water is also not a problem, as it’s water resistant up to six metres deep. The entire Mate50 series carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
HUAWEI AppGallery comes with all the apps you could want
You may be wondering if you can use your favourite apps on the Mate50 series, since it doesn’t come with GMS. However, it does offer HUAWEI’s own application store, AppGallery, the world’s third-largest application store.
From the AppGallery, you can download 99% of Malaysia’s most frequently used apps, including:
- Banking apps such as MAE, CIMB Clicks, PB Engage and Standard Chartered
- Food delivery apps such as Grab, Foodpanda and EASI MY
- Social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok
And if you’re worried about the safety of these apps, the AppGallery comes with a security check that scans for viruses and malicious behaviour, detects fraud and protects users’ privacy. You can perform a check yourself by going to AppGallery > Me > Security Check.
