Tumblr pokes fun at Twitter by letting users buy up to 24 “important” checkmarks for their profiles

After Twitter announced that they are letting their users (from specific regions) purchase their own blue verification checkmark by subscribing to Twitter Blue for USD 8, many protested it as it basically defeats the purpose of a verification checkmark. One of its competitors, Tumblr, recently introduced a feature that lets its users have two “Important Blue Internet Checkmarks” for the same price—and you can also apparently stack them and buy up to 24 checkmarks, just for laughs.

Tumblr has been seeing a rise in popularity again ever since Elon Musk had been trying to handle Twitter. The platform also posted a timely thread on Twitter trying to convince users to migrate. This includes them mentioning that Tumblr has a “free edit button“—something that Twitter has only offered to paying users.

Additionally, Tumblr has introduced two “Important Blue Internet Checkmarks” that users can purchase for USD 7.99 (one cent less than getting just one checkmark on Twitter). It also stressed that the checkmarks aren’t a verification status, but rather an “important blue checkmark, which in 2022 is just as legit”.

That joke refers to how Twitter now lets users purchase their own blue checkmark just by subscribing to Twitter Blue. This has led to many users misusing their profiles by changing their names to more official profile names like other celebrities and platforms. And if you want to check and see if an account is official or if the account has paid for the verification, you’d need to do it the hard way— by going to an account’s profile and clicking or tapping on the blue tick.

Tumblr’s version of its “important” blue checkmark isn’t at all for verification purposes as there isn’t much need to do so. A lot of the appeal on Tumblr is anonymity, and celebrities that have Tumblr accounts get a “verification” mostly through just trust and not much else. It also has a sense of humour, by letting users stack those double checkmarks multiple times.

Tumblr user Xellette managed to spend at least USD 104 (RM482.61) to find out that the platform lets you stack up to 24 checkmarks in total. They wrote that “Twitter can’t get a dollar out of me but Tumblr’s winning just by being funny”.

Today, Elon Musk tweeted that there are “far too many corrupt legacy Blue ‘verification’ checkmarks” that exist currently. So he has “no choice but to remove legacy Blue” in the coming months. There are also reports that Senior Executives on Twiiter have resigned as Musk is reportedly “taking crazy risks” with user privacy and safety.
