Disney+ increases subscription fee. New ad-supported plan launching 8 December

Disney+ has just announced that they will be increasing their subscription rates starting the 8th of December 2022. The new rates will be USD11/month (~RM52.20) for the monthly rate while the annual subscription will now be USD110/year (~RM522). On top of that, they’re also introducing a brand new plan that is ad-supported.

This new ad-supported plan will cost USD8/month (~RM38) while an annual subscription will be USD80/year (~RM380). This plan is set to be available on the 8th of December 2022. Of course, Disney+ aren’t the only ones who have an ad-supported plan as Netflix announced theirs back in October in 12 different countries. Netflix’s plan however is significantly cheaper, coming in at USD6.99/month (~RM33). That plan was due to be made available sometime in November.

A couple of differences though, between the two ad-supported plans. While Netflix‘s plans are indeed cheaper, the company claims that they will be showing 5 minutes of ads every hour while initial reports of Disney+’s plans claims only a 4-minute ad break per hour.

What about Disney+ Hotstar in Malaysia?

It is worth noting that for now, this seems to only affect Disney+ and not Disney+ Hotstar in Malaysia. Checking their website, the pricing still remains at RM54.90/3 months.

That said, I have already reached out to Disney+ Hotstar’s representative and are awaiting their response. Once I hear back from them, I’ll update the post with the relevant information.
