[ UPDATE 4/11/2022 9:00 ] U Mobile has removed its list of compatible devices for 5G and urges users to view DNB’s device list. However, they added that the devices listed on DNB’s website may still be subjected to software updates from device manufacturers.

U Mobile customers on supported 5G-enabled postpaid and prepaid plans can enjoy faster 5G connectivity starting today (3rd November 2022). They are the fourth telco to offer commercial 5G services in Malaysia after Yes 5G, Unifi Mobile and Celcom. To connect to Digital Nasional Berhad‘s 5G network, you’ll need a supported 5G plan, be within DNB’s 5G coverage areas and have a supported 5G device.

Similar to Unifi Mobile, U Mobile doesn’t support the Samsung Galaxy S21 and S20 5G series which are already supported on Yes 5G. Interestingly, U Mobile’s device list didn’t include phones from Asus, OnePlus, Nokia, Realme, BlackShark and Xiaomi. The device compatibility depends on the arrangements between the telco and the device manufacturer, and in most cases, a software update is required.
When can the iPhone support 5G on U Mobile?
U Mobile is still working with Apple to enable the service on existing 5G-compatible devices via a software update. U Mobile is one of the four Apple partner telcos in Malaysia and the users will need to get a carrier settings update in order to enable 5G on their devices. The current iPhone 12, 13 and 14 series support the required 5G bands in Malaysia.
Which U Mobile plan supports 5G?
At the moment, U Mobile is enabling 5G access for its U Postpaid 38, 68 and 98. The 5G usage will use the plan’s existing high-speed data quota and this means you can use up to 1000GB for 5G on the U Postpaid 98 plan. Take note that these postpaid plans only come with 5GB of hotspot per month.
For prepaid, U Mobile is offering 5G access for its U25 and U35 prepaid plans. However, users will only enjoy 5G through a speed booster which can only be activated for one hour per day (30 hours per month). You can learn more about U Mobile’s 5G-supported plans here.
