As announced last month, Huawei is launching the Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro in Malaysia today. The two smartphones are the Chinese giant’s latest flagship smartphones and pack some pretty unique features you don’t often see in the smartphone scene.

Huawei Mate 50 Pro specs
Starting off with the more premium of the two, the Mate 50 Pro has a 6.74-inch OLED display with curved edges, packing a 2616 x 1212p resolution making it a little more crisper than your standard FHD panel but also not as sharp as those QHD displays. Nevertheless, you’ll still get a max refresh rate of 120Hz, and a layer of Huawei’s own Kunlun glass over it for scratch resistance, named after the ancient Kunlun mountain range in China.
Under the hood meanwhile you’ll actually find some pretty flagship stuff, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 system-on-chip mated to 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. The caveat here though is that there’s no 5G connectivity here, nor is there any Google Mobile Services as it runs on EMUI 13 instead.
What makes the Mate 50 Pro stand out from the others in the flagship smartphone segment though is perhaps its camera setup. The main camera on the Mate 50 Pro here is a 50MP shooter with a variable aperture lens that is able to adjust from a maximum f/1.4 aperture to an f/4.0 aperture, something we haven’t seen since the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 series. You’ll also find a 13MP, f/2.2 ultrawide angle camera and a 64MP, f/3.5 telephoto shooter capable of a 3.5x optical zoom. The front camera meanwhile is a 13MP, f/2.4 selfie shooter alongside a 3D depth sensor.
Elsewhere, there’s a 4,700mAh battery with 66W fast charging and 50W fast wireless charging, stereo speakers, a fingerprint sensor and stereo speakers as well as an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. You also get support for Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi 6 and NFC, but as mentioned earlier there is no support for 5G. The Mate 50 Pro comes in black, silver or orange colourways, with the latter having a vegan leather finish on the rear too.
Huawei Mate 50 specs
As for the smaller stablemate, the Huawei Mate 50 isn’t actually that much smaller than its Pro sibling. While is doesn’t have the same curved edge display, the Mate 50 still has a big 6.7-inch flat OLED display that curiously has a slightly better resolution too, packing 2700 x 1224 pixels. However, it does only have a max refresh rate of 90Hz rather than a 120Hz refresh rate.
No change under the hood though as Huawei has kitted out the Mate 50 with the same Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor here with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. Similarly, there’s no 5G support either nor is there any Google Mobile Services, instead running on EMUI 13.
In the camera department, the Mate 50 also has the same 50MP main camera with that variable aperture camera allowing for you to change between an f/1.4 to f/4.0 aperture. It gets flanked by a 13MP, f/2.2 ultrawide camera and a 12MP, f/3.4 telephoto shooter offering a 5x optical zoom. On the front meanwhile is a 13MP camera for all your selfie needs.
Elsewhere, the Mate 50 has a 4,460mAh battery with 66W fast charging and 50W fast wireless charging, as well as stereo speakers, a fingerprint sensor and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. It also has WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity along with NFC support too. You’ll be able to get the Mate 50 in either Black or Silver colourways.
