Celcom has recently enabled 5G for its customers on selected postpaid and prepaid plans with high-speed data quota. Currently, Celcom is offering free 5G access to Digital Nasional Berhad’s network until the end of this year. If you’re on Xpax Prepaid, it appears that customers will have to pay RM10 a month for 5G starting next year.
Celcom has recently enabled 5G for its Xpax Prepaid plans that come with high-speed data quota. This includes Xpax Prepaid 35 (30GB High-speed) and Prepaid 45 (40GB High-speed). According to the FAQ, there will be a monthly 5G service fee of RM10 which will be deducted from the customer’s credit. However, this is currently waived until 31st December 2022. There’s a small possibility that the fee waiver could be extended.
From the looks of it, the 5G access will be offered as an add-on and it will be expired when the current Mix & Match pass expires. Take note that any 5G usage on Celcom will utilise your existing data quota. The free access merely allows you to access DNB’s 5G network and all 4G and 5G usage will deduct from your current high-speed data allocation.
In case you missed it, Celcom has upgraded its Mega 188 Lightning Postpaid plan from 120GB to a whopping 2TB of high-speed data a month. The blue telco has also whitelisted Ookla’s Speedtest on its network and users are able to run tests without deducting their high-speed data quota.
It is worth highlighting that DNB has yet to revise its 5G wholesale pricing under its Reference Access Offer (RAO) to the telcos which is currently set at RM30,000 per Gbps per month. When Celcom announced the execution of its Access Agreement with DNB for a period of 10 years, it said the RAO set out the salient terms and conditions subject to which network facilities and network services will be provided by DNB to Celcom. It added that the RAO may be updated or replaced from time to time in which case the Agreement will be governed by and incorporate the terms and conditions of the RAO published on the DNB Website. The true cost of 5G to consumers will greatly depend on the wholesale pricing between DNB and telcos.
