U Mobile has announced that it has concluded and signed off the 5G Access Agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). As a result, U Mobile customers will soon be able to enjoy 5G services within DNB’s coverage areas.
Starting 3rd November 2022, U Mobile customers with 5G-ready plans will be able to enjoy faster 5G services when using a compatible device. Here’s the list of supported U Mobile postpaid and prepaid that are able to access 5G this Thursday:
U Mobile Postpaid with 5G
- U Postpaid 38
- U Postpaid 68
- U Postpaid 98
- U FamilyShare lines
U Mobile Prepaid with 5G
- Prepaid U25
- Prepaid U35
On prepaid, U Mobile customers can only enjoy 5G only when they redeem the free Speed Booster (30 hours per month) on their plans. When activated, the Speed Booster offers full uncapped speeds for 1 hour per day. Without the booster, there’s a speed cap of 3Mbps on U25 and 6Mbps on U35. U Mobile customers on other plans are advised to stay tuned for more developments on their subscriptions.
[ UPDATE 3/11/2022 13:20 ] Only selected 5G smartphones can connect to U Mobile 5G. Here’s the full list of compatible 5G devices.
Commenting on the execution of the access agreement, U Mobile CEO Wong Heang Tuck said: “U Mobile is supportive of the government’s vision of a single wholesale network for 5G deployment, whereby all operators will have access to the same network without differentiation in terms of speed and quality. Hence, we are delighted to have signed the 5G Access Agreement and be part of this network. We have full faith that DNB will honour the mandate of providing quality 5G coverage and capacity on an equitable and non-discriminatory basis”
He added, “U Mobile is looking forward to providing 5G services from DNB’s single network, making us as well positioned as any other in the industry for 5G. We believe the combination of our award-winning and consistent 4G network with DNB’s 5G network will make for a seamless and unbeatable connectivity experience. We’re also looking forward to working with various industries to innovate services and improve efficiencies with 5G.”
DNB’s network currently has 33.2% 5G population coverage with a total of 1,915 sites. Their coverage includes Klang Valley, Johor, Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. According to its initial plan, DNB aims to achieve 40% 5G population coverage by end of 2022 and 80% 5G population coverage by the end of 2024.
Unlike Celcom, Digi, Telekom Malaysia and YTL Communications, both U Mobile and Maxis have decided not to take an equity stake in DNB. As announced last month, U Mobile says it will be able to offer 5G services without investing in DNB.
