Unifi Mobile has switched on its 5G services for selected prepaid and postpaid plans starting today after signing the 5G access agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad. Before signing up or buying a 5G-enabled pass, do note that only a handful of 5G smartphones are currently supported and the list is different from Yes 5G.
If you’re using an iPhone, you’re out of luck as Unifi Mobile is not listed as Apple’s partner telco. As explained by YTL Communications CEO Wing K Lee, Apple devices are capable of supporting 5G but it involves a licensing deal. A telco that signs up as a telco partner will have the ability to sell Apple devices and at the moment, only the big four telcos (Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile) have such arrangements.
Typically, you would think that all Android smartphones with 5G bands would work but that’s not really the case. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S21 series which works on Yes 5G is currently not supported on Unifi Mobile. Interestingly, the only Galaxy S20 series device supported on Unifi Mobile is the Galaxy S20 FE 5G.

At the moment, 5G is offered on Unifi Mobile’s RM59 postpaid plan (RM79/month without contract) or on their RM35/month Bebas monthly pass on prepaid. Meanwhile, U Mobile has announced that its customers will be able to enjoy 5G services starting this Thursday, 3rd November.
