Telekom Malaysia (TM) has announced that it has executed the Access Agreement (AA) with Digital Nasional Berhad on 30th October 2022 for 5G wholesale services. This will enable the telecommunications giant to provide commercial 5G services to consumers.
The signing comes right after TM signed its Share Subscription Agreement (SSA) with DNB on 7th October. TM is taking a 20% stake in the 5G single wholesale network alongside YTL Communications (20%), Celcom (12.5%) and Digi (12.5%). The government will hold the remaining 35% stake along with a golden share.
TM has recently unveiled Uni5G as its consumer 5G brand in preparation for its commercial launch. With the Access Agreement signed, Unifi Mobile customers are finally able to enjoy 5G in DNB coverage areas. They currently offer unlimited 5G data from RM35/month on prepaid or RM59/month on postpaid.
According to TM’s Bursa announcement, the AA sets out the terms and conditions for the wholesale access which commences retrospectively from 7th October 2022 until the expiry of 10 years on 6th October 2032. DNB will provide the National 5G Wholesale Network Product which is a base product on the DNB 5G Access Network. DNB’s 5G network is currently available in the Klang Valley, Johor, Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.
As of Q3 2022, the 5G network covers 33.2% of the population with a total of 1,915 sites nationwide. It aims to achieve 37.9% 5G population coverage by the end of this year and they have over 160 5G sites in East Malaysia that have yet to switch on. DNB aims to cover 80% of the population by the end of 2024.
TM says the signing of the AA demonstrates its commitment to long-term value creation for its stakeholders by leveraging on 5G technology to deliver best-in-class connectivity, solutions and customer experience. 5G will accelerate TM’s aim of offering Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) and advanced digital solutions to meet the dynamic and growing needs of communities, enterprises, industries and the nation.
At the moment, TM has 2.9 million fixed broadband subscribers as of the first half of 2022 and it believes that the provision of 5G services will enhance its position as the preferred partner in accelerating the adoption of FMC via 5G and fixed broadband services. It added that TM is well-placed to support the nation’s digital economy aspirations through their comprehensive network infrastructure, innovative products and services, and the upskilling and acquisition of technology talents.
