Apple’s new M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pro will reportedly launch in early 2023

If you were expecting new M2-powered versions of Apple‘s MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16, it looks like you’ll have to wait until next year. A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that these updated devices will likely only see a launch early 2023.

These new devices will reportedly launch with new M2 Pro and M2 Max processors, but will continue to look like the existing models. According to the report, the new M2 Max processor will see an upgrade to 12 cores from the 10 of the M1 Max, while its top graphics option will be upgraded to 38 cores instead (up from 32 cores).

The new MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 running on Apple’s own M1 Pro and M1 Max processors launched in October of last year, effectively replacing all the intel powered MacBook Pros—a milestone for Cupertino. However, this new crop of upcoming M2-powered devices will likely only see the light of day sometime in March of next year despite initial plans indicating a release sometime in September-October of this year.

Rumour also has it that a new M2-powered Mac Mini is also in the works, with Apple testing both the regular M2 chip that you’d find in the current MacBook Pro 13 as well as the new M2 Pro chips. Gurman also reports that the new M2 Pro chips will see an upgrade in terms of CPU and GPU core counts.

While this may come as a disappointment to those who were looking to pick up new MacBook Pros for the end of the year, the wait doesn’t look that far off for the new M2-powered devices. I’m personally more interested in whether Apple will be making any changes to the pricing of the new devices considering the weak Ringgit.

This year’s iPhone 14 series launched to a price hike of around RM300-RM700 depending on the model, which is no insignificant amount. It nudged the base model iPhone 14 Pro, for example, well over the RM5,000 mark, while the range-topping iPhone 14 Pro Max was now over RM8,000.

Currently, the MacBook Pro 14 with M1 Pro processor starts at RM8,799 while the MacBook Pro 16 with M1 Pro retails from RM10,799. If you wanted the more powerful M1 Max, you’re looking at a starting price of RM12,399 for the MacBook Pro 14 and RM14,799 for the MacBook Pro 16.
