Metaverse says they have 8,000 daily active users, not 30. But… do they really?

There were reports going around that a metaverse platform, Decentraland, had only 30 daily active users, despite its USD 1.2 billion market valuation. However, the platform fired back in a blog post explaining that it wasn’t the case, and that they actually have 8,000 daily active users.

“Recently, there’s been a lot of misinformation going around on the topic of the number of DAU (Daily Active Users) in Decentraland with numbers being reported that are far below the actual amount recorded by the Decentraland Foundation,” wrote Decentraland.

Decentraland is a virtual world platform that uses Ethereum to let users create, experience, and monetise content and applications. So,yes, it’s essentially a crypto-based metaverse—selling 90,000 plots of virtual land.

The platform explains that the current number of DAU in Decentraland is “around 8,000”. But they also say that in the month of September, they saw 56,697 monthly active users (MAU)—which they admit means that they would only have 1,866 DAU.

“But wait—1,866 would be the number of DAU if every one of those 56,697 unique individuals only visited Decentraland once in the month of September, and that’s not what’s happening. A large number of Decentraland’s users are repeat visitors, they are the Decentraland community and spend time on the platform on a regular basis,” explained the platform.

That doesn’t really make their numbers look any better. In fact, it’s a lot more confusing—is it 8,000 or is it not? They even said that an “active user” to them is “someone who enters Decentraland and moves out of the initial parcel they entered the world into”.

From how they explained it in their blog, it doesn’t seem like they have 8,000 unique visitors. Their real number is 1,866, and that number, even though it’s a lot more than 30, is still terrible. Still, at least they apparently don’t see the number of visitors as success.

“…it’s worth keeping in mind that Decentraland is not a company and that it doesn’t view users as a product by which to measure success… Decentraland’s goal is to be a fun and entertaining platform with a thriving community that educates and onboards people to the philosophies and tech of Web3 while empowering Creators in the hope that, when the masses realize why decentralisation is important, a viable option will be available and the next iteration of the internet won’t be monopolised by a handful of corporations,” explained the platform.
