Jasmine Lee, the former Chief Digital Officer (CDO) and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at U Mobile, has been appointed as the new Executive Vice President (EVP) for Mobile at Telekom Malaysia (TM). She’s also appointed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Webe, the mobile arm of TM. As the new chief of TM’s mobile business, she’s expected to revive Unifi Mobile which has not seen any major product update for over three years.
Jasmine has served as the CMO at U Mobile for 8 years and was instrumental in rolling out affordable unlimited plans that disrupt the telco industry. Before she left U Mobile, she was appointed as the telco’s first Chief Digital Officer (CDO) in November last year. Under the CDO role, she was focused on building and exploring new opportunities in the digital space and creating new digital experiences and data-driven solutions to benefit consumers.
Prior to joining U Mobile, Jasmine had served as the Head of Commercial and Commercial Director at AirAsia. She was also the CEO of MNC Wireless for over 7 years.
Unifi Mobile requires a major refresh ahead of 5G availability
Unifi Mobile (formerly known as Webe) is seen as the underdog telco which was launched in 2016 after YTL Communications’ Yes turned on their 4G LTE network. It currently has one #Bebas prepaid plan that offers no credit expiry and five postpaid plans including their RM59/month unlimited call, SMS and data option tied to a 12-month contract. These plans are virtually unchanged even before the pandemic and it appears that TM hasn’t been giving much attention to its mobile segment.
Late last year, TM announced that Unifi Mobile postpaid customers will soon experience 5G services on Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) network. However, the plan to offer 5G services was postponed indefinitely.
Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz said last month that TM and YTL Communications (Yes) have obtained approval from their board members to sign an agreement to take up shares in DNB. However, TM has not yet made an announcement on the 5G deal with the national single wholesale network. At the moment, Yes 5G remains the first and only telco to offer 5G services in Malaysia.
Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, was expecting for the 5G deals with DNB to be sorted out by 30th September. The deadline has passed and there are no new updates on the equity deal and access agreements.
