The iPhone 14 series has barely gotten into people’s hands and there are already rumours surrounding the iPhone 15 lineup. This time it’s related to what Apple would be naming the big boy iPhone because reports indicate that they may be dropping the Pro Max in favour of something else. Something with a name that’s inspired by their Android rival.
Apple switched things up this year when they dropped the iPhone Mini for the iPhone Plus, but it looks like they may be doing another little switch with the iPhone 15 series. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Cupertino might be renaming their big boy iPhone the iPhone 15 Ultra.
In the larger scope of Apple’s current product lineup, it would make sense that the most capable iPhone sport the Ultra moniker. After all, they’ve already done that with the Apple M1 Ultra processor that sits in the Mac Studio, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra, which is essentially a beefed up Series 8 Apple Watch. Though, their claims of it being “for adventurers” might be a little bit of a reach.
Now, obviously these are very early rumours and should definitely be taken with a grain of salt, but it would be interesting to see if they end up keeping both the Pro Max and the Ultra, but have the Ultra be like a step above even the current king of iPhones. Unfortunately, the report doesn’t have any information on the specs of the device or if there will be any specific new features that may end up being introduced on the Ultra model.
But, like the iPhone X, the Ultra could prove to be yet another turning point for the iPhone lineup as a whole. They could, for example, introduce features like a USB-C port, or a brand new camera system, or maybe two Dynamic Islands since people seem to be loving it so much (no, this is a bad idea please don’t).
After all, the current crop of iPhones left many incredibly underwhelmed because of the lack of significant upgrades or changes. Perhaps it is because Apple is saving up something big for the iPhone 15, or perhaps we’re just looking at the limit of what the smartphone as a piece of technology can do. Who knows? But I’d like to propose a wacky theory.
So, you know how the Apple M1 Ultra processor is two M1 Max processors stuck together? What if the iPhone 15 Ultra is also two iPhones stuck together? I don’t know, maybe with a hinge? Something that would allow it to transform into a smaller form factor? And if you slap a flexible OLED on top of it, maybe it could be…a folding smartphone?
Of course, this is a complete shot in the dark here so I wouldn’t trust it as far as I could throw myself. But if this ends up being true, I will accept the title of Prophet Rory. You have been blessed with some crazy. Have a good day.
