This post is brought to you by HONOR.
The HONOR 70 is the newest entry in the HONOR Number Series and brings two major updates to design and the all-important camera system, making it a worthy successor to the HONOR 50.
But for those who might have missed out on the news, the HONOR 70 made headlines for being the first smartphone to debut SONY’s latest IMX800 image sensor. This image sensor brings improvements over the flagship IMX766 sensor found in most high-end smartphones on the market.
So, the big question now is how does the HONOR 70 take advantage of this new hardware?
Triple camera system spearheaded by SONY IMX800
There’s no other way to start talking about the camera system than with the primary wide-angle camera. Here is where the 54MP SONY IMX800 image sensor is housed with a sensor size of 1/1.49″ and an f/1.9 aperture.
Thanks to the larger sensor, the HONOR 70 captures more light data, thus producing a brighter image. HONOR reckons, compared to the IMX766, the new IMX800 can deliver up to 23% more dynamic range. Besides a boost in image quality and clarity, the HONOR 70 takes advantage of the new image sensor to provide better low-light performance.
HONOR is well aware that producing great-looking photos out of a smartphone requires not only capable hardware but also smart software. As such, the HONOR 70 comes equipped with the HONOR Image Engine that handles computational photography and HONOR RAW algorithm system.
Colour reproduction is one area where you can see the effects of HONOR Image Engine with more vivid colours without feeling over-saturated. What’s more impressive is the colours in photos taken in low-light conditions are well preserved, bringing the photos to life.
Sticking with low-light environments, the HONOR 70 is able to strike a balance between the contrast of bright signboards and objects lit by stray lights, such as the vegetation in the image above. The exposure is low enough for the signboard to be legible but without making the entire scene dark.
Meanwhile, in this photo, you get an image that is not over-saturated with lights from the LED strips and restaurant lamps, making it washed out. There is enough brightness to highlight the details in the scene while keeping the night-time vibe.
Finally, in this photo of a Koi Pond, you can see how the colour details of the plants and Koi fishes are not completely lost due to lack of light. At the same time, the dark tiles create a contrast with the colour of the Koi fishes, which wouldn’t be possible if they were blown out.
Therefore, HONOR is confident that the photos produced by the HONOR 70 deliver more than what you would expect to find in a mid-range smartphone.
In case you need to switch up shooting modes, there’s also an ultra-wide main camera with a 122° field of view. But unlike a 12MP or 5MP unit you will find in most smartphones in this class, the HONOR 70 features a 50MP sensor, allowing for better quality ultra-wide photos.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are times when you need to get close to your subject, like when taking a photo of a sunflower or the veins of a leaf. In this situation, you can switch to the HONOR 70’s 2MP macro camera which allows you to get up to 2.5cm close to your subject.
Wrapping up the camera list is the ever-popular front camera which on the HONOR 70 is a generous 32MP for all your selfie and Zoom needs.
Record two different perspectives simultaneously
HONOR sees the need for the younger generation to express their creativity through video and is featuring Solo Cut in the video mode of the HONOR 70. When recording with Solo Cut turned on, the phone will crop into your subject of choice and actively track them as they move within the frame
Now, the cool part is that the HONOR 70 is also recording the full view of the frame as well. Essentially, the smartphone is producing two 1080p, FHD videos with a 30fps frame rate simultaneously with both video streams getting Beauty Effects and electronic image stabilisation (EIS).
This feature could come in handy when you’re watching a school play your child is in and want to record just your child’s movements but still want to record the whole play with everyone in it.
Good performance for everyday use
When you’re not busy taking pictures or admiring the Crystal Silver colourway, the phone is able to excel at everyday tasks thanks to capable hardware under the hood.
For starters, you get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ processor mated to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage, which is the highest variant of the HONOR 70 available.
These components work together to make navigating your busy day as hassle-free as possible with speedy app launches and minimal hiccups.
Up front, there is a 6.67” FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, featuring one billion colours. Moreover, the display is capable of 1920Hz PWM dimming which helps to eliminate screen flicker at low brightness levels like when viewing the phone in bed at night.
Providing power is a respectable 4,800mAh with the ability to quickly give you back a full charge thanks to support for 66W HONOR SuperCharge.
