There’s just something about Penang that makes the state one of the go-to places for good-tasting food—and I’m not just saying that because I’m from Penang. And now, if you’re craving some Penang nasi kandar, you can just order some through the AirAsia app as the service has just launched today.
“As the only food delivery platform which is part of the same ecosystem as AirAsia’s extensive flight network, we are proud to introduce something unique in the food delivery scene—bringing food from around the world to you. Furthermore, our aim is to champion local hero merchants who can now tap on AirAsia’s ecosystem to reach a much wider audience and expand their deliveries beyond their city, as they are able to promote their products to millions of active AirAsia Super App users across the region,” said Tan Suan Sear, Regional Head of AirAsia Food.
AirAsia’s food delivery platform, found in its “super app“, has launched orders for several favourite Penang food. There are only a handful of choices for now, but AirAsia promises that there will be more options in the future. Here are the options right now:
Halal
Non-Halal
Take note that all vendors that offer “air-flown” dishes won’t open every day for AirAsia Food orders. Orders close at 5pm one day before the scheduled delivery day, and the delivery fee for each order is RM5.99.
You even have the option of pre-ordering the meals up to 30 days in advance. Here’s how to get started:
On the AirAsia app (iOS, Android, Huawei), click on the Food icon for the AirAsia Food front page. You can either press the banner advertising intercity delivery, or scroll down to find the Penang Intercity Food Delivery section. If you can’t find the section, the location you’re at might not be covered. For some reason, the option doesn’t cover my area in Cheras but it covered the office area in KL city.
Choose your Penang food vendor, and then your meal set. It looks like the intercity deliveries only offer bigger orders like two sets of nasi kandar ayam, or 40 pieces of kuih. You can’t really order just one plate.
The price is also a little steep—at RM33.52 for two sets of nasi kandar with rice, chicken, and boiled egg. The app also tells you that for Hameediyah, for example, they only do deliveries on Wednesdays.
You’ll also need to choose a delivery slot. The earliest delivery for the Hameediyah order is for 17 August 2022, 5pm to 5.30pm. The delivery fee is RM5.99, with an additional RM3 fee for the inter-city delivery. But if you’re a member of the Super+ pass, delivery is free and you’d only need to pay the inter-city delivery fee..
“As of today, we are proud to introduce some of the best meals that my hometown, Penang has to offer, and very soon the new service will also include food from other states in Malaysia to be delivered to more locations in the Klang Valley and beyond. We have successfully launched the same intercity food delivery service in Thailand where popular delicacies from Phuket are flown in to Bangkok to great fanfare and interest of the diners,” added Tan.
According to a Google reviewer, two plates of Biryani with mutton, veggies, and egg at Hameediyah in Penang costs about the same as the two basic air-flown meals. The prices might be a little high, but it could be worth it depending on how badly you want to eat Penang food.
