This is the biggest sign yet that Apple Pay is coming to Malaysia

Just a day after the Apple Pay option for payment cropped up on the Shopee app, more signs that the contactless payment method could soon be available for Malaysians have appeared—and I meant that literally.

As spotted by Twitter user Fitri Samsil, an Apple Pay sign was seen when he made a trip to a local Maxis Centre. The sign has ‘NEW’ written on the top left, with the Apple Pay logo right in the middle along with the text ‘Apple Pay accepted here’. It also shows an Apple iPhone 13 and an Apple Watch Series 7 with Apple Pay on their screens.

Apple Pay of course is still not available officially in Malaysia at time of writing. It works by letting you hook up your physical credit or debit card to the Wallet app and you’ll essentially be able to use your iPhone or Watch to tap for contactless payment methods. While it’s still not available in Malaysia just yet, when we tried out the iOS 16 Public Beta, we were able to see a ‘Get Started With Apple Pay’ message on the Wallet app.

If Apple Pay does end up in Malaysia though, that would make us just the second country to get the service in Southeast Asia, with Singapore currently the only one able to make use of Apple Pay. In fact, only nine regions in the whole of Asia support Apple Pay, which are:

  • Australia
  • China
  • Hong Kong
  • Macau
  • Taiwan
  • Japan
  • Kazakhstan
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore

The Apple Pay sign being seen at a Maxis Center comes right after iPhone users began reporting seeing an option to pay with Apple Pay on Shopee. You can read more about that here.
