This post is brought to you by OPPO.
OPPO’s Reno Series of smartphones have a long history of providing decent performance and specs in the mid-range smartphone segment. A good example would be the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G which offered users a mixture of decent mid-range features with impressive AI photography.
This time around, OPPO has decided to introduce a slew of flagship components with the Reno8 Pro 5G, pushing it a class above, to premium mid-range.
So, what does the Reno8 Pro 5G pack that makes it sit above the Reno7 Pro 5G, and as a matter of fact, above every Reno Series before it?
Flagship-class camera paired with a dedicated image signal processor
Despite both the Reno8 Pro 5G and Reno7 Pro 5G sharing the same flagship grade, 50MP Sony IMX766 image sensor, the Reno8 Pro 5G is able to outperform its predecessor thanks to the inclusion of the MariSilicon X Neural Processing Unit (NPU), plucked directly off the flagship OPPO Find X5 Pro 5G.
This dedicated, OPPO-developed image signal processor is able to leverage the power of computational photography to produce clearer images with greater colour expression. Where you will notice the biggest difference when comparing the Reno8 Pro 5G with the Reno7 Pro 5G is when taking photos and videos at night.
With the MariSilicon X NPU and the SoC working together, it enables a feature called 4K Ultra Night Video on the Reno8 Pro 5G. When shooting at your favourite location during the night, the MariSilicon X NPU controls exposure in the highlights while retaining details in darker areas.
You not only get better-looking footage but also one with minimal noise thanks to the complex AI noise reduction algorithms enabled by the MariSilicon X NPU. Just like with videos, you can also get brighter and more colourful photos while shooting night-time photos with the Reno8 Pro 5G.
This great camera experience is also passed on to the 32MP front camera which uses a flagship class Sony IMX709, co-developed with OPPO. Thanks to the extra processing horsepower, you now get autofocus on the selfie camera for the first time on a Reno series smartphone with the Reno8 Pro 5G.
A screen that moves and responds faster
When the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G debuted last year, it packed a 6.55” FHD+ AMOLED display with a fast 90Hz refresh rate. However, the Reno8 Pro 5G goes a step further by offering a larger 6.7” FHD+ AMOLED display with a super-fast 120Hz refresh rate.
Therefore, when you’re scrolling through your TikTok feed, swiping through a photo gallery on Instagram or even while navigating ColorOS 12.1, all these actions will feel buttery smooth, giving the impression of better performance.
If you’re a mobile gamer, you will be pleased to know that in selected games like PUBG Mobile and LOL Mobile, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G can boost its touch sampling rate from 360Hz, all the way up to 1000Hz.
Thanks to this increase, your inputs are converted into actions with minimal delay. Combine this with the option to enable 90FPS in the graphics settings in PUBG Mobile, and what you get is a smoother gameplay experience.
Bringing a touch more immersion is the addition of an X-axis linear vibration motor to deliver better haptic feedback.
Huge performance leap from its predecessor
Being a mid-range smartphone, the Reno7 Pro 5G was equipped with a mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 1200-Max processor, delivering adequate performance. This time around, OPPO has opted to level up the performance of the Reno8 Pro 5G by fitting a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max processor, built on an advanced 5nm process to deliver flagship-level performance.
Running alongside the processor is 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM paired with 256GB of UFS 3.1 onboard storage. With this bump in overall processing power compared to the Reno7 Pro 5G, you get to run more performance-hungry apps and games with more ease on the Reno8 Pro 5G.
In the battery department, although the Reno8 Pro shares the same battery capacity as its predecessor, it has upgraded to 80W SUPERVOOC charging. Now, you can get a full charge after a short 28 minutes on the included charger.
Another upgrade the battery receives is a Tüv Rheinland Safe Fast-Charge System Certification which has been tested to provide 2 hours of gaming session after just 5 minutes of charge.
Sleek design built using premium materials
While the OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G had an eye-catching design, it was somewhat interrupted by the camera bump protruding out from the glass back.
To eliminate the unappealing standalone camera bumps you’d find in most smartphones, each back glass has been hot forged in a high-pressure environment with temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius before they’re hand polished to perfection with diamond sheets.
This creates a single piece of glass that smoothly flows over the camera bump with a ceramic-like texture. Then, you have to consider the fact that OPPO has wrapped all of this hardware, neatly into a streamlined unibody design that stands out from the crowd.
Moreover, the Reno8 Pro 5G is OPPO’s thinnest Reno series smartphone to date.
Seamless connectivity with OPPO Pad Air
OPPO has designed the Reno8 Pro 5G to interact seamlessly with the OPPO Pad Air Android tablet. Firstly, there’s Multi-Screen connect which allows you to cast the screen of the Reno8 Pro 5G to the bigger screen of the Pad Air.
This could come in handy when you’re sharing content with a friend. You also have the option of using the Reno8 Pro 5G as an input device for the Pad Air with a virtual trackpad and keyboard.
Through the same feature, you can also share items copied to the clipboard between the two devices. So, for example, you can copy a link to a website selling a brand-new pair of shoes on the Pad Air, and paste the link into WhatsApp on your Reno 8 Pro 5G.
You can have your OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G in a new Glazed Green colour option along with a stealthy Glazed Black.
