Here’s why M. Nasir is joining a Mobile Legends eSports team

eSports organisation RSG Malaysia announced that Malaysian music legend Datuk M. Nasir is joining its Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team for the upcoming season. In its Instagram post, RSG said the musician will take on a “flex role” (or extra player) under the moniker “Sifu”.

RSG Malaysia’s country director Johnny Tan even remarked that it was “not a prank“. As for why he joined the team, Tan continued saying that M. Nasir had demonstrated interest in eSports and MLBB. Additionally, the 65-year-old musician was able to bring a bit of zen to the team when needed.

“Due to his age and experience, he’ll also be able to advise the team on how to be more calm and less kan cheong (nervous),” he said.

After RSG Malaysia broke the news on social media, fans shared their confusion. They remarked on Facebook that M. Nasir joining the team was “random” and some asked if they “were dreaming”. But plenty were equally as excited to have a local celebrity onboard an eSports team. RSG Malaysia even posted a picture of M. Nasir wearing the team jersey to hype fans up.

Just in case you might not know, MLBB is a multiplayer online battle arena game for mobile phones, developed and published by Moonton, a subsidiary of ByteDance. Yes, TikTok’s company. RSG is just one of the teams in Malaysia dedicated to eSports.

There are other teams like SEM9, and it recently even launched its own eSports hotel in Johor. SEM9 describes its eSports hotel as a hotel with rooms “tastefully decked with LED lights” and “ultra high-performance gaming computers powered by the latest Nvidia graphics”. You can watch our visit to the SEM9 Hotel here.
