Celcom won’t let you add-on extra data on high-speed Mix & Match plan

Celcom has recently introduced its new Xpax Mix & Match prepaid plan which aims at providing users greater freedom to customise their plans to avoid wastage. On the surface, this looks like an attempt to replicate Yoodo, which has been Malaysia’s first fully customisable mobile plan. When we look closely, it seems that Xpax’s “customisable” offering is quite rigid and there are some glaring limitations on what you can add.

Based on their promo materials, it appears that all users will be able to complete their plans with any add-ons regardless of the type of primary plan you’re on. As shown in the example above, users who prefer high-speed data instead of unlimited, are be able to add-on calls and more data under Step 2.

Celcom has clarified that the high-speed internet and hotspot add-ons are only applicable if you go for the Unlimited quota plan. This means if you’re on high-speed data, you’ll have to choose your desired amount of data upfront in Step 1 as there’s no option for you to add-on more data with the advertised 20GB for RM8, 10GB for RM5 or 5GB for RM3 rates. This is also mentioned in their FAQ.

This means if you don’t fancy the unlimited options which comes with capped speeds and 60GB Fair Usage Policy (FUP), you are only left with three high-speed monthly internet options – 8GB for RM20/month, 30GB for RM32/month and 40GB for RM42/month. On top of that, Celcom is offering free unlimited access for “Essential apps” namely Boost, Line, WhatsApp and WeChat with a FUP of 10GB. Overall, this isn’t as generous as Yoodo’s current offering where users can currently enjoy 20GB for RM20/month.

Unlike Yoodo, Celcom does not provide a calculator on their website and you can’t get an immediate estimate of how much your customised Mix & Match plan will cost you per month. To sign up as a new customer, you’ll have to buy a Celcom Xpax Prepaid starter SIM which is currently going for RM5 and it comes with RM6 preloaded credit. For existing Xpax customer, you can change your plan on the Celcom Life app or SMS “MIG XPAX” to 28882.
