Galaxy Z Fold 3 users rejoice: Gboard finally has an option for a split keyboard

While foldables are slowly but surely becoming more common, one particular gripe Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 users who use the Gboard keyboard have with the typing experience is when using the larger, inner display. Using a large on-screen keyboard isn’t exactly an enjoyable task as you’ll need to stretch your thumbs to hit keys in the middle of the keyboard often.

However, a new update to Gboard looks set to fix this. Users have begun noticing that their Gboard now has a feature allowing you to split the keyboard, bringing the keys closer to edge of the screen. This provides a much more ergonomic and comfortable typing experience especially if you’re typing with your thumbs. As 9to5Google notes, you’ll see the option to switch between a split keyboard and a regular keyboard right on the toolbar on the keyboard.

The split keyboard however won’t remain in its split mode when you’re using the outer cover display, which is much more narrower in width than even your regular smartphones. In comparison, Galaxy Z Fold 3 users who switched to Swift Keyboard have found that while you do get the split keyboard when using the larger display, the split keyboard remains when using the tiny outer display too.

Android tablet users thoughs who have the same problem have yet to report seeing this option appear on their devices. Not all Galaxy Z Fold 3 users have gotten the split keyboard option too.

It’s worth nothing though that this is only showing up in Gboard beta version 11.9.04, so you’ll want to first ensure you’ve gotten that version of Gboard installed on your Galaxy Z Fold 3. Once you have done so you should see the option appear in the coming days.
