Samsung’s RM5,000 The Freestyle isn’t just a movie projector. Here are five other things you can use it for

Here’s the deal: Samsung’s The Freestyle costs RM4,849—and it’s essentially a projector. However, Samsung claims that it is “able to deliver optimal viewing and entertainment for customers looking to bring video and audio content wherever they go”. 

After checking out what it has to offer, I was intrigued to learn that it’s got a few different ways to make this pretty expensive projector something worthwhile. So, besides it being a portable way for you to watch movies on your living room wall, what are the other ways that you can use the Samsung Freestyle?

Power up a workout session

A huge problem when working out at home is that, at often times, I’m only able to project a workout video on my small laptop screen. My television is in another room, and I wouldn’t want to bother my family members’ TV time if I plan to put on a yoga video.

Having The Freestyle to easily project a workout video to my wall means that I don’t have to squint my eyes at a small screen when I want to learn a new move. The Freestyle’s auto focus feature also helps display the screen on any surface from any angle—at up to 100 inches.

To project a YouTube video, or any similar video from a streaming platform, you can do so right from The Freestyle itself. You don’t need to hook it up to any laptop or device like how you would a normal projector.

The sound that comes out of The Freestyle is also pretty decent, so you’re able to hear the directions coming from your yoga guru.

Light up the party

You can liven your house party with the different Ambient Mode options that The Freestyle has. They vary from “city” or “birthday” lighting, scenes like “sunset” and  “mountain”, cinemagraphs like “fireplace” and “winter”, as well as different “windows” that you can project to make your room look more open-aired. 

The Ambient Mode light I tried for a “party scene” is the neon “city” lighting mode. I mean, you can experiment with the modes to see which ones suit your party best—but lighting mode gives a dark room a cool glow. It can also be used in a corner for you to take Instagram pictures with.

Use it for a mood light

The Freestyle is pretty light and small, and you can basically carry it around with you. This means that it can easily be plugged into almost any part of your home—whenever you need it.

So, when you’ve clocked out, and need a tiny night-light glow during movie nights, the Samsung Freestyle can help you with that. Switch on Ambient Mode, and then add the Freestyle’s translucent cap on—and the projector will turn into your very own mood light.

Based on what kind of Ambient Mode lighting you’ve switched on, the mood light can switch colours or pulse. This mode doesn’t even need to be for sleep-time. How about a candle-less candle-light dinner? A glow for meditation or bath time? Whatever works.

Have it as a work or study buddy

Another selling point of The Freestyle is that you’re able to project it almost anywhere—not just to walls or ceilings. You’re able to project it on a table—granted you’d need to put the Freestyle on something higher than your table for it to work.

Still, The Freestyle’s auto focus feature should be able to project what you want clearly. But if you need a little more focus, you can also do so manually. 

Projecting The Freestyle to your work desk basically means that you have an extra screen that you can focus on other than your laptop. It could be great for online meetings and presentations, and extra material for studying.

Film TikToks with aesthetically-pleasing lighting

So, I’m on TikTok a lot—and every now and then I’d have the urge to post my own take of a TikTok trend. Usually, I’d have to live with the basic indoor and outdoor lighting. But some of the best looking TikToks out there use some form of pretty lighting—like a ring light, a sunset lamp, or even full studio lighting.

What The Freestyle can help me with are the many variations of lighting modes. Besides “lighting”, “scene”, and “cinemagraph”, I found that The Freestyle’s “prism” section offers a variety of visually pleasing lights and colours.

I tried filming a couple of TikToks with the prism mode, and it gave me interesting results. It almost made me feel like I was in one of those interactive light museums.

But of course, if you’re just looking for studio-like lighting for your average TikTok, there’s a mode in The Freestyle that gives you a mock ring light to give your face that sparkle. And if you want a sunset lamp-like effect, The Freestyle can give you that, too.
