Lightyear won’t be released in Malaysia without an official reason. But we think we know why

An unofficial source stated that Pixar’s upcoming animated feature Lightyear will not be playing in Malaysian cinemas. Originally, the movie was slated to open in Malaysia on 16 June.

There has not been an official announcement yet from the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia, or from the movie’s distributor Walt Disney Company Malaysia. However, GSC has already acknowledged the news and even made a meme based on it.

Lightyear, based on Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story franchise, focuses on the story of the “real” Buzz Lightyear. The space ranger is voiced by Chris Evans instead of Tim Allen, who voiced the Lightyear toy in the Toy Story movies.

There has not been an official reason as to why Lightyear won’t be shown in Malaysian theatres. However, we can guess that it will likely have to do with “homosexual themes” in the film—the same reason as to why countries like Egypt and UAE have banned it.

There is reportedly a scene in Lightyear that features a kiss between a same-sex couple. In March, Pixar came under fire for cutting the scene from the movie—but the studio later restored that scene to the movie after backlash from its own employees.

Even though the movie won’t be released in Malaysian theatres, it is still expected to show up eventually on Disney+ Hotstar. We just don’t know when it will stream on the platform yet.
