Garmin Malaysia has officially introduced the Vivosmart 5 for the local market. It brings a couple of notable improvements and it replaces the Vivosmart 4 fitness band which was introduced four years ago.

The Garmin Vivosmart 5 is officially priced at RM730 in Malaysia and comes in three colours – Black, White and Mint. You can buy it now online via Lazada, Shopee and Aeco. Alternatively, the fitness band is also sold at Garmin Brand stores and authorised retailers throughout Malaysia. The band can be ordered in either S/M or L sizes.

The Vivosmart 5 claims to offer a comfortable, easy-to-read smart fitness tracker and it’s packed with Garmin’s most advanced sleep features including sleep score. Compared to its predecessor, the new model gets a 66% larger OLED display that pushes 154×88 pixels resolution. The display is a monochrome unit, which is quite a surprise considering it costs more than RM700.

Besides having a brighter screen, the Vivosmart 5 now gets a touchscreen and a button interface which makes it easier to navigate around. Another noteworthy upgrade is the ability to swap the silicone bands as opposed to the previous model that has a fixed unibody design.

In addition to your usual fitness tracking, the Vivosmart 5 also supports smart notifications from your smartphone and you can also sync it to the Garmin Connect app. There’s also built-in heart rate monitoring which alerts you if it’s too high or too low, as well as a Pulse Ox sensor which can check your blood oxygen saturation levels.

The band also features stress and respiration tracking, as well as, women’s health tracking to track menstrual cycle or pregnancy. If you’re wearing it while sleeping, it also can provide a sleep quality score with additional insights available through the Garmin Connect app. The score is given based on an analysis of both the quantity and quality of your sleep including time spent in sleep stages, amount of movement and stress levels.

The Vivosmart 5 still doesn’t have built-in GPS but it relies on smartphone-assisted connected GPS to provide accurate tracking during your outdoor fitness activities. Garmin has also included safety and tracking features that can send an SOS message along with your live location to your emergency contacts through your paired smartphone.

The Vivosmart 5 is rated at 5 ATM which makes it suitable for swimming. On a full charge, it is rated to provide up to 7 days of use in smartwatch mode, which excludes Pulse ox and sleep tracking. The Garmin Vivosmart 5 is compatible with both iPhone and Android, and supports Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity.
