If you wish to stay connected with your local SIM while travelling overseas, U Mobile is currently having an international roaming promo where you can get 10 times the high-speed data from RM10/day. Typically, U Mobile offers “unlimited” data roaming which comes with a fair usage policy (FUP) quota of 500MB/day. With the current promo, you can enjoy up to 5GB of high-speed data in selected countries.
According to U Mobile’s website, you can enjoy 5GB data per day with U Data Roam in 15 countries, namely Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. However, only 12 of the countries listed are priced at RM10/day, as data roaming in Brunei, Myanmar and Vietnam still cost RM36/day.
Do note that this 10x more high-speed data promo is valid for a limited time from 15th April to 30th June 2022. Once you’ve hit your daily 5GB limit, you can still continue to stay connected but your speeds will be slowed down. Unlike Maxis which offers 5G roaming, U Mobile currently only has 4G roaming arrangements with their partner telco in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
With U Mobile, there’s no need to purchase a special pass to enjoy data roaming. Make sure you activate International Roaming for your account before your trip. If you’re a new U Mobile customer for less than 6 months, you will be required to activate auto-debit for your bill payment and call them at 1318. For port-in customers, you can visit any U Mobile centre with your past 2 months’ bill or past 1 month bill with international roaming usage.
For existing U Mobile customers of more than 6 months, you can activate immediately by dialling the shortcode *118*6#, or SMS “ON ROAMIDD” to 28188, or activate via the MyUMobile App.
When you arrive at your international destination, make sure you connect to the right partner telco before you turn on Data Roaming on your phone. Go to your phone’s settings > Mobile Network and search for network. Make sure you pick one of the partner telco listed below to enjoy the RM10/day data roam service.
In terms of the billing cycle, the FAQ states that the data roaming quota and charges will be refreshed after 24 hours. For example, if you start using it from 1.05pm today, the 24 hours for the pass is valid until 1.04pm the next day, instead of the previous method of refreshing the pass at 12:00am based on the country’s capital city of the roaming country. It is mentioned that the 24-hour calculation was introduced on 18th February 2020.
