Wait a minute… the new Harry Potter RPG actually looks good

I’m a millennial, which means that you wouldn’t be surprised to know that I grew up loving the Harry Potter series (although it’s not as fun to admit it these days). I’ve usually kept up with whatever the Harry Potter franchise spews out but since the release of the terrible Wizard’s Unite game, I haven’t had any hope expecting anything good to come out of the video games. But then I watched the 14-minute preview of Hogwarts Legacy.

At PlayStation‘s State of Play stream, developer Avalanche Software released preview footage of the new Harry Potter RPG game, Hogwarts Legacy—ahead of its release date later this year. And it honestly looks really promising.

In the game, you’re able to create your own character with what looks like a really detailed character-maker. You’ll also get to live out your Hogwarts dreams and be sorted into one of the four Hogwarts houses, as well as take classes and roam around the school campus.

And just like any good RPG, you’re able to learn different combat combinations and tailor-make your own preferences in order to fight your enemies. For this game, you’re able to learn spells, potions, and other magical things from your time at Hogwarts.

But it’s not just Hogwarts that you can explore for yourself, you’re also able to go to places like Hogsmeade—just like Harry Potter and his friends. However, given that the game is set in the 1800s, don’t expect to see too many familiar faces. Instead, the story will focus on a “possible rebellion of goblins against the Wizarding World”.

The game certainly does seem like an exciting new RPG that would entice many Harry Potter fans. But after J.K. Rowling—author of the Potter series—made a series of transphobic comments online, many fans have abandoned interest in the Wizarding World entirely. Warner Bros. had to assure fans that Rowling isn’t directly involved in the game, but, as Polygon noted, Rowling will almost certainly make money from Hogwarts Legacy, as she still profits from the Wizarding World itself.

Hogwarts Legacy was originally announced for a 2021 release date, but it was delayed to 2022 shortly after its announcement. The game is now expected to be released by the end of the year. And despite debuting via Playstation’s platform, Hogwarts Legacy isn’t a PlayStation 4 and 5 exclusive. It will also be released on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / Series S—and even the Nintendo Switch.
