Is Apple seriously about to launch a new iPhone in 2022 with 64GB of storage?

We’re just days away from the upcoming ‘Peek Performance’ event by Apple, and as is usual before these events we’re seeing a flurry of leaks and rumours about what to expect. There’s some pretty concrete evidence already that we’re about to get a new version of the iPhone SE with 5G connectivity, but you may one to stay far, far away from the base model if one analyst’s claims are to be true.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has made a list of what he predicts we’ll see from Cupertino and it seems as though he fully expects the new iPhone SE to come with a base model with just 64GB of storage. That’s pretty paltry by 2022 standards, with even most mid-range devices these days coming with a base storage option of 128GB. Of course, the iPhone 11 and 12 that are still being sold also start at 64GB of storage, but with the iPhone 13 switching to a 128GB of storage as the base model there was some hope that it would’ve been the same for the iPhone SE.

Some predictions for the coming new iPhone SE:
1. Mass production in Mar'22.
2. Estimated shipments of 25-30 mn units in 2022.
3. Storage: 64/128/256GB.
4. A15 & 5G support (mmW & Sub-6 GHz).
5. Casing: white, black, and red.
6. Similar form factor design to current SE.

— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) March 4, 2022

Nevertheless, the 64GB of base storage will be pretty disappointing especially if they keep the RM1,999 starting price that the current iPhone SE from 2020 has. You’ll still get a 128GB and 256GB storage option for the upcoming iPhone SE though. Currently, the 128GB iPhone SE from 2020 retails for RM2,199 while the 256GB model goes for RM2,699.

Additionally, Kuo mentions that production of the new iPhone SE begins this month, and that Apple is expecting to ship up to 30 million units of it by the end of the year. He also believes it’ll come with the A15 Bionic system-on-chip, the same one powering the iPhone 13 lineup. It should come with the same colour options as the current iPhone SE too, namely white, black and a Product (RED) version. The upcoming iPhone SE should otherwise retain the same iPhone 8-style design, complete with a 4.7-inch Retina Display and physical Touch ID fingerprint sensor too.

Kuo has been a market analyst covering Apple stuff for quite some time now, and typically looks at Apple’s supply chain for hints and clues on what’s going on within Cupertino. AppleTrack has given him an accuracy rating of 70.4%, with some recent notable claims being that the iPhone 13 lineup will start at 128GB of storage as well as correctly predicting the Apple AirTag’s 2021 launch.

Of course, these all remain rumours for now and we’ll only really be sure of what Apple has in store for us when the Peek Performance event rolls around. It’s happening on the 9th of March, 2am local time and you’ll be able to watch it live on the Apple website as well as their YouTube channel.
